Project Perfection Week 21

We are in contact with Carley and things are going well. She reports she is running faster and farther. She does secretly admit she misses lifting weights at the intensity she was lifting before. Carley notes her greatest improvements with this phase so far is definition in her legs and her abs. are ripped. She feels the tone in her arms has remained. We are getting close to reassessment. We are also working on picking out a competition to enter. The competition should be picked this week. Not much else to report. Looking forward to seeing Carley’s results in person.

The summer is shaping up nicely. We hope everybody is shaping up nicely. Our S.P.A. (Speed, Power, Agility) camp is under way. We have a great group and  changes in the athletes are already visible. The staff is very pleased with everybody and their efforts. It was funny to hear everybody complain how sore they were after the first day. By session number three, there were very few complaints of soreness. Our easiest week has been completed, the difficulty increases each week with the goal of having everybody in tip-top shop and performing at their highest level by camp’s end.
Why the soreness in people who have been playing sports and are for the most part in shape? Two reasons, lactic acid and specificity of  training. Lactic acid is the waste muscles produce when they work hard. It is felt as muscle soreness and stiffness in the muscles. Specificity of training means if you train only one way i.e. as a distance runner, your body adapts to be efficient at that activity. If you train differently, for example by doing sprints, your body is not adapted to that, as a result you not sprint very fast and your muscles may react by becoming stiff. The good news is, both situations improve with training. This is another reason to mix up your workouts. One of the goals of a trainer is to keep the body from adapting by changing workout routines. This is another good reason to seek out the advice and supervision of a trainer. They can help you get over those stale spots in your training when you aren’t seeing progress.
We hope you are in the middle of your summer workout routines. Get out of your comfort zone and do something different. You may be pleasantly surprised.
