The winter semester is coming to a close. That means spring sports are wrapping it up their seasons and tournaments. Our weight loss challenge came to a close last week . Two people achieved the goal of losing 7% or more of their bodyweight since January. They will be taking home $350 each. John Carson started at 256 pounds and finished at 234 pounds for a total loss of 22 pounds. John needed to lose just under 18 pounds to win. Steve Larson lost 24 pounds. He started at 254 pounds and ended at 220. Steve also needed to lose just under 18 pounds. Congratulations to both of you. It wasn’t a total loss for those who didn’t win. Just about everybody lost weight. Hopefully the changes everybody made in their diets and lifestyles will be long lasting.

This weekend was the last weekend for open training sessions for young atheletes. We will be taking a break and resume when the S.P.A. camp starts with baseline testing on June 9th. We are presently accepting registrations for summer camp and the deadline is June 1st. The weekend adult classes at Grass Lake will continue on Saturdays. If you have questions about Saturday or weeknight exercise classes, do not hesitate to call us, 847-395-6100.

As the school year comes to a close, we wish all of our student athletes good luck at your future schools. For all of those athletes who will be participating in State Playoffs for their sports, make us proud and do your best. We hope to see everybody continue with us over he summer. We’re there for you if you need us.

We’re back. It seems like things keep getting in the way of writing our newsletter. But, that’s just an excuse, and you know what excuses are? Excuses. Sorry for the skipped week. Two weeks ago we were waiting to hear whether Brad Fortney would be drafted in the NFL draft. First of all, we would like to apologize for spelling his last name incorrectly. The error slipped through the cracks. We hope you will be seeing his name more in the Sports pages. Brad was not officially drafted, but, he was invited to the Bears mini-camp starting May 10th. They would like another look. Good luck Brad, you are on the NFL radar.

We are taking applications for our summer S.P.A. ( Speed, Power, Agility ) camp. Applications are on our website. If you have any questions, feel free to call Steve or Larry at 847-395-6100. If summer schedules make it difficult for your athlete to attend all sessions, don’t worry, you don’t have to pay for those sessions they will miss. We allow you to deduct $10 for each session they will miss, as long as you indicate the dates they will miss in advance. Take a look at Stephanie Parks, one of our SPA camp alumni!

SPA Camp alumnus Stephanie Parks

Finally, we are covering listening. Things that effect what we hear are environment, emotions, physical barriers, and attention. Environment is usually the place where the communication takes place i.e. the playing field, the gym, or your den. In that environment there can be many distractions such as loud noise, things moving by quickly, or many bodies around you. Emotions can get in the way as a distraction. They can be anger, disappointment, humiliation, or pure joy. Physical barriers like a helmet, distance on a field, or being on the other side of a barrier can block communication. Attention is the key to working through all of the things that can get in the way of good verbal communication. The listener needs to give full attention to the communicator and block out all interference that can block a message, including themselves. All too often we stop listening half way through and make assumptions based on the small bit of information we have processed. We get stuck on how something is delivered and perceive it incorrectly. A good example of this is a message that is delivered by yelling. People hear yelling and just assume it is negative. People make a conclusion on what somebody is saying before they complete their point and that conclusion does not match their conclusion, they perceive it as negative. The point hear is, when listening, allow the communicator to complete their message, and then make your conclusion. If you don’t understand, get all the information, then make your conclusions from what you really hear. Try it. You may find people are actually more helpful and smarter than you think.

Sorry for skipping a week, we’re back. Things are going well for our athletes who are in season and those who are working-out with us. We are finalizing our summer schedule and dates have been set for our S.P.A. ( Speed, Power, Agility ) Camp this summer. We will be performing baseline testing, at no cost, on Saturday, June 9th, from 7:30a.m.-8:30a.m., at Grass Lake School. Camp starts June 12th and runs through July 7th. Sessions will be from 6:30a.m.-7:30a.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. There will be a second two week session focusing strictly on linear running speed. Times and days are the same for the second session. The registrations will be on the website soon. If you have any questions, call Steve or Larry at 847-395-6100.

If you haven’t noticed, Brad Fortny has been helping with our weekend and Monday night sessions. We are in the process of adding Brad to our staff. The only thing in the way is a potential draft into the N.F.L. We’re keeping our fngers crossed for Brad. Keep him in mind on draft day. Also, we’d like to congratulate Sarah Fonk on throwing a no-hitter two weeks ago for Central High School in Salem, Wisconsin. She was one walk away from a perfect game. Congratulations Sarah.

Two weeks ago we said we would start covering the topic of listening and how important it is. There are many ways to listen. You can listen with your ears and hear. You can listen to your body. You can observe and note body language. When listening, you have to hear, really hear. By hearing, you get information. If hearing is obstructed by noise, situations, or state of mind, the listener may get the wrong information. With the wrong information, the listener will make wrong conclusions. Think about this for the next week and try to come up with situations where poor listening has led to the wrong conclusion in a situation. It could be how you didn’t hear somebody correctly, how you felt you ate enough before taking on a task, or, how you din’t notice somebody was tired and you assumed they could do more than they were capable of. Next week we will cover listening to somebody verbally. All the things that can get in the way, and how detrimental those things can be in making conclusions.

Have a good week!

Happy Easter! We hope you all kept your promises to yourself throughout the Easter season. After New Years, the lent season is the second most popular time to give things up. My mother always told me to do something to improve yourself, and when Easter came, try to make that change in yourself a permanent part of your life. Quitting something is easy, I’ve done it hundreds of times. Making a change in how you do things is hard. For the next few weeks, we are going to analyze what it takes to make a change that makes a difference. Next week we will analyze listening, really listening, and what it means.

We are happy to anounce, tomorrow, Monday, April 8th, Jody Emer, of Thyme2Shine, will be bringing a sampling of healthy, performance enhancing foods into Colletti Physical Therapy. We will be serving the food after 6 p.m. and during the 7 p.m. execise class. Jody is a wealth of knowledge on preparing nutritious meals to meet goals of all kinds, from improving recovery after competition, to losing weight. She can do anything from prepare and deliver meals to teach cooking and meal preparation. Please stop in tomorrow and give the samples a try. Healthy food doesn’t have to taste bad. See for yourself.

Have a good week.

The first quarter of the year is over already. It has been a good year so far for Kinetic Connections and all of our clients and followers. People have been reporting their progress in the weightloss challenge, and the results are very positive. There is only a month and a half until fnal weigh in. Let us know how you are doing. We just completed our first Spring Break Mini-Camp. Turnout was very good with a total of 9 athletes participating. We will be doing it again next year. Tomorrow night starts our first weeknight, open, conditioning sessions. We hope to see some new faces that have not been able to participate on Saturday or Sunday mornings.

Finally, on occasion, we like to recognize our athletes for their performance on the field. This week we would like to recognize Kelsey Borders, Grayslake North, softball player. Over spring break, Kelsey hit 3 home runs. During a doubleheader against Maine South, Kelsey went 5 for 8, with 2 home runs, a triple, 5 RBI’s, and 5 runs scored. Congratulations Kelsey, your efforts over the winter are paying dividends this spring. Being able to recognize athletes for their accomplishments, is what makes our job exciting. Thank you everybody.

Happy post-St. Patrick’s Day. Hope we find you well. It’s March Madness time. College basketball’s showcase. Last friday was a day that gave us something never seen before, more low seeded teams beating top ranked teams in one round than ever. Everybody loved it. The common denominator for all those teams that won was they believed in themselves. Being a winner starts with positive mental attitude and the belief that you can do whatever you want if you put your mind to it. It’s always interesting to hear parents tell us their young athletes would like to work with us on the weekends and in our camps, but they’re too early. That’s an excuse that is convenient. Even negative in thought. However, if they had a game at that hour or had to get up that early to travel to a game, more often than not, there would be no complaint about getting up and getting ready to play “THE GAME.” But, getting up early to put the work into being the best is something many doubt they can do. Be positive, don’t let excuses get in your way.

The registration for our Spring Break Speed and Agility Camp, March 26-March 30, is online. Go to our website and click on programs and click on optimum performance camps. It’s time to start thinking about summer camp. Call or contact us if you have questions. And, finally, don’t forget we will start holding open workouts on Monday nights at Grass Lake School from 7:30 p.m.- 8:30 p.m. starting April 2.

Have a good week!

This was a good week for us. Last Tuesday we had the pleasure of leading the students at Emmons school through calisthetics prior to taking the ISATS. Recent studies have shown students perform better on tests if they participate in moderate exercise prior to taking exams. Thank you to the P.E. staff and the Superintendant for having us. We will be speaking at the Antioch High School girl’s basketball banquet on the value of offseason training. We appreciate the opportunity to promote the value of conditioning for sports.

We have had positive feedback regarding Speed and Agility camp over Spring Break. We hope to have a registration form on our website for the spring session within the next couple days. Any questions, call us at 847-395-6100 or e-mail us at info@kcconditioning.com. Information regarding our summer camp will be coming out soon.
